In the quest for sustainable development, the manufacturing sector faces the dual challenge of minimizing environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency. This PhD project aims to address this challenge by developing a comprehensive framework that integrates environmentally sustainable practices with competitive manufacturing strategies. The project will explore innovative technologies and management practices that promise combined benefits. The goal is to provide actionable insights that can lead manufacturing organizations towards a more sustainable and economically viable future, thus contributing significantly to global sustainability efforts.

Today, sustainable manufacturing is critically important due to increasing environmental concerns such as climate change, resource depletion, and pollution. Governments worldwide are imposing stricter regulations on emissions and waste management, pushing industries towards greener practices. Simultaneously, consumers are increasingly favouring products made with sustainable methods, influencing market dynamics and competitive business strategies. Thus, developing methods that can effectively integrate environmental sustainability into the core operations of manufacturing organizations is essential for their long-term viability and compliance with global sustainability standards. This project contributes to the urgent need for practical solutions that enable industries to meet these dual objectives of ecological responsibility and economic competitiveness.

The aim of the project is to develop a robust framework that enables manufacturing organizations to integrate environmental sustainability into their operational processes without compromising their competitive edge.

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for transformational research and education in technology and management. Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF) has recognised 88% of Cranfield’s research as world-leading or internationally excellent in its quality. Every year Cranfield graduates the highest number of postgraduates in engineering and technology in the UK (Source: Higher Education Statistics Agency Ltd). Cranfield Manufacturing is one of eight major themes at 麻豆社. The manufacturing capability is world-leading and combines a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates design, technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of manufacturing research.

The Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre (SMSC) is a world-leading centre focusing in transforming manufacturing for a low carbon economy. We are creating new models of best practice to help businesses think green, smart and (c)lean. We apply fundamental science and thought leadership on the technological, economic and social context to identify ways forward for commercial success and sustainability.

The expected impact of this research project on developing environmentally sustainable and operationally competitive manufacturing organizations is broad, spanning academic contributions, industry practices, policy influence, and social benefits. Academically, it aims to enrich the theoretical and empirical understanding of sustainable manufacturing. For the industry, it offers a framework that enhances sustainability without sacrificing efficiency, potentially giving firms a competitive edge and reducing operational costs.
